THE ORIGINS
A place rich in history
The earliest Olivetan foundation in the Marche was Santa Maria Nova in Camerino, established in 1386. However, records from that period also mention an earlier monastery located just outside the town, not far from the village of San Marcello, known as Sant'Angelo del Morrone.
According to the historians Lili and Turchi, it was an "Olivetan monastery", and Giovanni di Berardo Da Varano arranged for the monastery in Camerino to be built for its monks.

Feliciangeli points out the error made by the two historians from Camerino, who believed that the Olivetan monks had lived at Sant'Angelo del Morrone before the foundation of Santa Maria Nova in Camerino. He nevertheless acknowledges that the monastery may have been home to a Benedictine community belonging to another rule.
It is surprising, however, that the monastery is not mentioned by Amatori or by Olivetan historians. The first Olivetan monks to settle in Camerino were therefore those brought there at the request of Giovanni Da Varano.
Feliciangeli also recalls that, a few months before his death, Giovanni obtained from Pope Urban VI the granting of 100 days of indulgence to those who visited the church of Santa Maria Nova.

Three ruined buildings remain of the Monastery of Sant'Angelo del Morrone, near the village of San Marcello in the municipality of Camerino. They were later adapted for use as farmhouses and a barn. Two large 14th-century brick arches and a 15th-century sandstone portal, possibly belonging to the church or the monastery, can still be seen today.
